Jason has been on staff at Hope Church since May 2008. He holds a B.A. in Communication Studies and Classics from Samford University in Birmingham, AL and a Master of Divinity from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, MA. During his tenure in Massachusetts, Jason met his lovely bride, Megan, while serving together on the worship team at Community Church of East Gloucester. Jason currently fulfills many pastoral and administrative duties and oversees the worship ministries of Hope Church, including leading music and preaching. While Jason would love to pretend he is diligent with all of his time, he is a remarkably effective slacker who loves to spend time writing and playing music, smoking pipes and cigars, fishing, watching movies, and reading.

The purpose of the youth ministry is to connect middle school and high school students to the larger body of Hope Church while providing age-appropriate activities in which students can connect with God and grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. Students are strongly encouraged to be a part of ministry activities within the church as well as participate in the youth ministry. So, check out Youth Group on Tuesday nights and other activities throughout the year. All students are welcome regardless of church membership or denominational affiliation.

Please use an "Allergy Alert" sticker for allergies.Label all personal items. It is preferred that no personal toys be brought, but if your baby needs a special "lovey," you are welcome to bring it if it is clearly labeled, preferably with a "This Item Belongs To" sticker. Graduation: Infants: Toddlers will 'graduate' from the Infant class at a self-paced, developmentally appropriate time. Once you feel your child is ready to advance from the Infant class and is ready to be with other 2 and 3 year olds, then you and your child are invited to ‘graduate' together and come visit the Toddler class for a trial Sunday. This way with parental presence the transition will be easier for the maturing toddler. You also will be able to personally assess your child's readiness to participate in formal activities like story time and craft time.

Hope Church exists to provide a pathway for people to connect to God. We exist especially for those people who are not currently part of a church. We want Hope to be a warm place where people from all kinds of backgrounds can find a safe, common environment in which to explore their faith.

When you sit down at Hope, you could be seated next to someone who has always attended church, or next to someone who is in church for the first time in a very long while. You could also be seated next to someone who grew up Catholic, Jewish, Baptist, or without any faith at all! Hope already feels like home to people with all of those backgrounds, and we hope it will feel the same to you as well.

Brad Smith is originally from Livonia, Michigan but, as the only non-Texas born child in his family, has honorary Native Texan status. He has been a government auditor, a graduate student, a college professor and now serves as a "data wrangler" for a firm which does health care research on governmental contracts. Brad met his wife, Sheryl, in high school, dated for a while, then didn't date for a while, and then providentially came to his senses and married her in 1992. They are parents to four kids, Maddy, Eli, Mairi and Isaiah. He and his family have been members of Hope Church since 2007. He is active as a teacher in Hope for Kids, Hope Church's children's ministry program, and enjoys playing guitar on the worship team.

We want to give God our best by rehearsing, planning, and thinking through the specifics of each service, eliminating distractions by removing the hurdles of "bad" music, clumsy segues, and "loose" group dynamics. It is our prayer that this will allow the congregation to worship without being distracted and free them to enter into worship unencumbered. Therefore, it is the mission of the worship ministry at Hope Church to encourage believers to live out the worship of God, not only through our Sunday services, but also in our daily lives.If you desire to get involved in the worship ministry at Hope Church, please complete the registration form and/or contact Jason Wood.

Kids at Hope - Children

"The Important People"

At Hope Church we value children as an integral part of our congregation. It is a privilege for our Hope for Kids team to spend time with these youngest members of God's kingdom. We want them to feel involved and to be able to enjoy praising God with their families as well as the entire church body. For this reason, our children participate in the first part of the worship service, which includes singing and a special children's chat with the pastor. After that time the children are dismissed to attend their classes in age and grade specific groups. Nursery, Infants & Toddlers Kinder & Prek 1st / 2nd / 3rd Grades 4th & 5th Grades

It is here during our Hope for Kids program that our ministry of connecting real people to the real God truly begins. Our teachers and volunteers are committed to bringing the life-changing love of Jesus to the children by not only reading Bible stories, but also by involving them in dramas, music, activities, crafts and games that have an impact on them on many levels. Our view is that church should be both meaningful and fun. We emphasize that the Bible is the infallible Word of God that was written for us and that it has relevance for our lives today. We teach them of God's incredible love and amazing grace and of the hope that we have in Jesus.

Hands of Hope - Missions - San Antonio

Hands of Hope is an army of volunteers mobilizing several times a year to fix up the exterior of homes in the neighborhood surrounding the Frank Garrett Community Center. We have completed a number of projects, all with church volunteers, who collect trash, do yardwork, fix doors, siding and windows, paint and caulk, and generally make the homes beautiful and more secure. Many of the recipients of this work are elderly and have not had the ability or means to fix up their own homes. One woman had not sat on her porch in over 15 years and now can be seen every day outside waving to passers-by, proud once again to be a part of the community. Volunteers are always needed; we provide the tools and supplies as well as lunch. These projects usually run from 8 am to early afternoon.

The Garrett Center routinely lets Hope Church know when there is a need in the community, and we are here to serve.

Click for map of Frank Garrett Community Center.

Hurricane Relief: Hands of Hope projects extended to families in San Antonio that had been displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in late 2005. Volunteers served in shelters, drove people to work and to doctors appointments, provided meals and shelter, arranged employment, threw baby showers, and delivered babies home from the hospital. For everyone it was a labor of love, extending the hand and love of God to those in the community family. Contact Christy LeRoy for more information on Hands of Hope.

Hope Church has a unique relationship with a city-run community center through which we are able to do urban outreach to the community. Our work with the Frank Garrett Community Center located slightly west of downtown San Antonio is extremely rewarding. The project has expanded from a week-long Urban Vacation Bible School every summer to include activities throughout the year for the kids in their program. In addition, there are ministry opportunities with the disabled adults in their Therapeutic Recreation Program (see below for more details). Our ministry through the Frank Garrett Community Center is mainly a ministry of presence in which our actions of support for their staff and programs show God's grace. Our Hands of Hope projects are also scheduled through the Center.

All of the work through the Frank Garrett Community center and some materials and donations are provided by Hope Church volunteers. Contact Christy LeRoy for more information.

Deacons are representatives of the congregation who:

pray, show mercy, encourage those hurting or in need;
provide meals, calls and notes;
help with general problem solving;
encourage benevolence, giving and stewardship;
offer financial and personal counseling;
promote congregational involvement;
and offer a moving ministry.

Deacons are chosen to be the hands feet and heart of Hope Church. Deacons are nominated by the congregation each year. The nominees spend about six months in prayer, and study preparing for the position, after which they are officially elected by the members of Hope Church and formally ordained into office. To contact the deacons, email Dan Moreno or the Hope Church office, or telephone 545-HOPE (4673).

If you have elementary aged kids or younger, you will be directed to our Children's Ministry check-in table where you may register your kids for our Children's Ministry and/or nursery. At check-in you will be given a pair of matching numbered stickers, one for you, and one for each of your kids. That way no one can pick up your kids, except for you when you show up with the matching number.

Then head upstairs where another smiling face will hand you a bulletin about the service that Sunday. Hang a left at the top of the stairs and look for the coffee tables. (If you have a nursery-aged little one--under two, you may wish to take them into the nursery area in the school's teachers' lounge at this time and leave them with one of our loving volunteers. We have a nifty digital notification system should your child need you during the service.) Grab a cup of gourmet coffee courtesy of the Lighthouse, and head into the cafeteria along with the whole family.

We desire to see God create in us a place where people who have not been in church for a while can come through our doors and feel warmly welcomed and comfortable enough to begin to explore their relationship with God.

We desire to see that relationship continually develop from knowing God through Jesus Christ to worshipping Him, growing in Him, and reaching out to others with His love.

Mission: Connecting Real People to the Real God - Our Mission & Vision

We believe first and foremost that the church exists primarily for those who don't desire to go to church!

Jesus Christ came to this Earth precisely for those who were disenfranchised and cut off from the religious mainstream. In fact, the book of Romans tells us in chapter 5 that Jesus died for us while we were still enemies of God. This gives us our ethic for how we look at the church, and sets the stage for defining our mission.

We exist for those who hate us, don't care about us, or otherwise don't want to be a part of what we're doing.

Women's Ministry - Women's Ministry

Women at Hope Church are really involved! The Women's Ministry program is led by Linda Schumacher. There are a couple of Bible versus that help to define the mission of the Women's Ministry and they are as follows:

Philippians 2:1-4
If you've gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care - then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don't push your way to the front; don't sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don't be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.

Ecclesiastes 4:12
By yourself you're unprotected. With a friend you can face the worst. Can you round up a third? A three-stranded rope isn't easily snapped.

Another insightful description of our goal for Women's Minsitry is written by Dr. Larry Crabb in his book Soul Talk: "We cannot experience the love and joy of real life until we're connected to another at the level of our soul. We cannot know the freedom to be who we truly are until we yield who we really are to another and experience that person's acceptance. We cannot move into our world with othercentere energy and noble purpose as long as we remain along-unknown, unexplored, undiscovered, and untouched."

The service is usually over around 11:30, roughly an hour and fifteen minutes. If you have kids, now is a good time to go get them from their classes. If you confess that it's your first time to visit, you will be given a Hope Church coffee mug, along with a small sample of that delicious gourmet coffee from the Lighthouse, and some information on our church. Additional information can be found on the "Hope Happenings" table upstairs.

At this point most people feel pretty good about their visit. Your kids had a great time (they're pulling on your arm saying "Can we come back tomorrow!?") , you enjoyed the service and were struck by how genuine and "normal" the people were. You don't have that creeped out feeling that you were hoping would not come over you, and you're actually thinking to yourself, "I could come back here." Of course, if this is not the case, then break for the car at a dead run! Oh yeah, and if Hope's not for you, let me know and we'll give you a list of other churches that we think are healthy, but are just a different style from us.

Find a seat, and settle in. There will be music playing, and people getting situated; the service will begin around 10:15. There will be three or four songs mixed in with prayers and maybe a Bible verse or two, and then the pastor will have a chat with our favorite people, the children. He will call all the kids fifth grade and younger down to the front, read them a Bible verse, talk about it on their level, pray for them, and then send them out with their teachers to our children's ministry, Hope for Kids. (For your safety and ours, all of our children's ministry volunteers are screened and required to fill out applications that give us permission to run background checks.)

While the kids are out enjoying a Bible-based lesson at a level they can understand, the youth and adults are in the service listening to the Scripture reading, and the message based on that passage. After the message we will sing another song, and then have a time of offering. (Don't worry, we won't pass a plate around or have an altar call! It's a time for everyone to reflect on God's Word and offer themselves to God privately.) After the time of worship through offering, we sing a concluding song, and the pastor offers God's blessing over the congregation before we head back into our hectic weeks!
